Benefits of Canine Massage Therapy

Massage has a whole range of benefits, largely related to tissue tensity and mobilisation. It can provide relief to conditions such as lameness, muscular injury, ageing, orthopaedic and neurological conditions.

Massage has proven to reduce tension and pain and return the muscle, and in turn, the mobility and posture of the dog, to promote normal function. Massage can be used in every type of dog that does every type of activity. Dogs may just require a routine maintenance massage and some may have certain condition such as;

  • hypertonicity
  • lameness
  • myofascial pain
  • muscle pain
  • strains and sprains
  • hip and elbow dysplasia
  • cruciate ligament disease
  • Post operative care
  • luxating patella
  • osteoarthritis

So what are the benefits of massage?

  • Pain relief
  • Promotion of oxygen to the tissues
  • Reduces inflammation, discomfort and lameness
  • Encourages removal of toxins via lymphatic drainage
  • Improves mobility and range of motion of joints
  • Improves and maintains muscle tissue
  • Improve wellbeing, encourages relaxation and reduces anxiety
  • Allows the dog to return to normal activity and function
  • Rehabilitates muscular injury
  • Supports orthopaedic issues

Laser therapy

I use a laser called Optimus Lumina, a red light therapy which is a non-invasive, drug free device used to assist in the healing of tissues.

Its benefits include;

  • Increasing circulation and nutrients to the affected area aiding in better metabolic waste removal.
  • Releases endorphins and relieves pain
  • Reduces muscle spasm and inflammation and relaxes tension in the tissues

The laser has the option of blue light which can be used to help reduce bacterial growth in infections and wounds.

Kinesiology taping

Kinesiology taping for dogs is an emerging technique designed to provide additional support and comfort for our four-legged companions. Originating from the principles used in human physiotherapy, this method involves the application of elastic therapeutic tape to specific areas of a dog's body. It can assist with muscle support, joint stabilisation, and promote better circulation. Commonly used for dogs recovering from injuries, dealing with arthritis, or experiencing post-surgical discomfort, kinesiology taping can help reduce inflammation and improve mobility.

What are the benefits?

  • The lifting action of the tape creates space between the layers of fascia which increases circulation of blood and lymph, relieves pressure on nerves, arteries and veins and reduces the compression of pain on sensory receptors
  • Creates a continuous feedback to the brain acting as a stimulus
  • Reduces inflammation, swelling and pain
  • Improves range of movement
  • Reduces fatigue and muscle spasms
  • Releases fascia and scar tissue and promotes healthy tissue
  • Improves balance and posture
  • Assists the muscle, activating weakened muscles by re-educating and improving tone
  • Relaxes muscle by encouraging it to lengthen, recover from and prevent injury
  • Supports and stabilises- this can be done by restricting movement or holding an area in place. Particularly useful in puppies or geriatric dogs, sore or stiff dogs and great in use of sporting dogs
